How coronavirus may affect the eyes

Please be aware that the Coronavirus can spread easily through the eyes, and not just the mouth or nose. When someone with the COVID-19 virus coughs, sneezes, or speaks, microscopic particles may enter your body through your eyes, nose, and mouth. It is possible to become infected simply by rubbing or touching your eyes after coming in contact with a surface with the virus on it. If you are a contact lens wearer or suffer from allergies, please remember to thoroughly was your hands prior to touching your eyes.

The virus has been found to last for weeks in the tear film. It has been associated with a form of “pink eye” or conjunctivitis. Some patients will develop chemosis, or swelling of the external layers of the eye. Discharge has also been reported in some cases. A recent study using retinal imaging technology found some signs of inflammation and small hemorrhages inside the eye. The coronavirus is not expected to directly affect your vision at this time.

Observe social distancing and hygiene guidelines to decrease your risk of infection. Wear a mask and face shield to reduce the spread of the virus.
